PhD topic and brief description

  • The aim of my PhD topic is to achieve optomechanical oscillators (OMR) consisting in a suspended semiconductor membrane pierced by a photonic crystal. Such structure sustains both optical modes around 1.55 µm and mechanical modes around a few GHz. On one side, a silicon waveguide, integrated underneath the membrane, allows for an optical control and detection of mechanical resonances. On the other side, surface acoustic wave transducers formed by interdigitated electrodes, deposited on top, allow for resonant acoustic excitation of the mechanical frequency. Such a nano-structured optomechanical resonator inserted within an on-chip feedback loop exploiting photonic and acoustic circuitry, insuring high stability of the oscillation frequency in the GHz frequency range could lead to a compact and integrated oscillator for potential on-board applications (timing and filtering for communications and sensing).
